Baby Formula Bottles
It is important to know how to properly use baby formula bottles. The warming and cleaning of bottles must be done a certain way to ensure safe feeding for your baby. The first step after purchasing a bottle or package of bottles is to sterilize them. There are different methods that can be used to do this. While boiling water is the traditional sterilization method, you can also scrub the bottle with a brush, hot water and a tiny amount of dishwashing liquid. Yet another way to sterilize bottles is in the top rack of the dishwasher, just make sure the bottles you've chosen are dishwasher safe.
Once the bottle you plan to use is clean and dry, you are ready to prepare the formula. Infant formula is available in powder, liquid concentrate and ready-to-feed liquid forms. The most popular type of formula is the powder variety because it is usually the most convenient and economical. If you are using powder or liquid concentrate you will need to add water. In the early months of your baby's life you may choose to sterilize the water by boiling it first then allowing it to cool to the proper temperature. However your baby's pediatrician may tell you that water from the tap is fine, the choice is yours whether or not to boil the water before using it.
When mixing the water with the liquid or powder concentrate follow product instructions to the letter. Do not attempt to stretch the formula by diluting it more than the package instructions say because your baby will not receive the proper nutrients. Once the formula concentrate and water is mixed properly it is time to warm the bottle. If you are using boiled water that has cooled to a warm temperature you can skip this step.
The best way to warm a bottle of prepared formula is by placing it in a pan of very hot water until the mixture has reached ideal temperature. However many moms warm the bottles in the microwave. If you do this, make sure the bottle is microwave safe and always leave the nipple, collar and ring off. Because the microwave can heat unevenly shake well after warming and let the bottle sit and cool a bit. Regardless of your warming method always test the temperature of the formula on the inside of your wrist before feeding your baby. Clean and dry baby formula bottles as soon as possible after each feeding session.
