Baby Formula Cost
It seems everything is going up in price lately, including baby formula. You can expect one average sized container of formula to cost you anywhere between $10 and $30 depending upon the brand and variety. Generic store brands are going to cost the least on average, while name brand specialty formulas will cost the most. Two of the most popular brands are Similac and Enfamil. These brands offer iron-enriched and low-iron milk and soy based formulas. Carnation is another top brand of formula affiliated with Nestle. One way to reduce your baby formula cost no matter what brand you prefer is to comparison shop.
However, you may find that buying store brands or looking for sales is just not working as well as you hoped. Luckily there are other strategies that can be implemented when looking to save money on formula. If you use a name brand like Similac, Enfamil or Carnation, join the mailing list of the company. They will send out samples and coupons for their products to families on the list. Another way to save money is to buy in bulk. While you can find bulk cartons and cases at discount stores warehouse stores are probably your best bet.
Examples of warehouse stores include Costco and Sam's Club. You can find large quantities of formula at these stores. The larger the quantity, the less money per can on average you will spend. You don't usually need to worry about the formula expiring, because most varieties have a long shelf life. Powdered formula kept in a cool dry area may not expire for years. Usually the exact expiration date is stamped on the bottom of each can.
Of course the best way to save money on baby formula cost is to breastfeed. Both the FDA and the World Health Organization recommend breastfeeding for babies up to six months of age. Breast milk contains the perfect balance of nutrients that babies need to thrive. The first few days after birth a yellowish thick substance called colostrum is produced. Colostrum is the perfect food for your brand new baby, packed with not only nutrients but antibodies to protect your baby against infection. Even if you want to bottle feed consider breastfeeding for the first few days then try switching over.
