Baby Formula Food

The FDA and World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding for at least the first six months of life. However they also concur that the formula found on United States store shelves is almost as good as breast milk and is safe and nutritious for your baby. If you are feeding with formula you may be wondering when to make the baby formula food switch. Actually, you can give your baby both formula and baby food if they are old enough. Formula should be given until your baby is one year old, at which time whole milk should be substituted.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) formula or breast milk should be your baby's sole source of nutrition until six months of age. However some parents decide to begin introducing solid foods around four or five months of age. If you aren't sure when to begin with baby food ask your pediatrician. The first foods recommended for babies are rice cereal and oatmeal. These foods come in boxes of dry grain and are made by both name brand companies like Gerber and store brands. To prepare just follow the instructions on the package, the cereal usually calls for water or prepared formula to be added until it is the right consistency.

If your baby takes a liking to plain cereal you can gradually add small amounts of fruit. The fruit should be in the form of jar baby food or homemade with a food processor. The consistency should be completely smooth. The best fruits to begin with are bananas, peaches and apples. You can find fruit blends by Beech Nut and Gerber that contain two or more fruits, like strawberry and banana or banana and blueberry for example. Stay away from citrus as this is too acidic for infants.

When it comes to introducing vegetable and meat baby foods, ask your pediatrician when he or she thinks your baby is ready. Cooked and pureed carrots, squash and green beans are often favorites with little ones. Meat baby food should be smooth and contain no seasoning, you will find chicken, turkey and beef jars on store shelves. Store bought baby food should be marked with a clear indication of what age or stage it is appropriate for. Older babies can graduate to chunkier foods and more dietary variety. The baby formula food issue is one that may be slightly different for everyone. There are pediatric guidelines to follow regarding both formula feeding and solid food feeding, however some babies will more readily accept new foods in their diet than others.
