Baby Formula Nutramigen

Enfamil is a brand of baby formula made by the Mead Johnson Company. You will find many varieties of Enfamil baby formula. Nutramigen Lipil, for example, is a hypoallergenic formula. Some babies suffering from colic find relief from hypoallergenic formulas. This particular formula is made for infants who cannot tolerate intact protein that is found in both milk based and soy based baby formulas. The extensively hydrolyzed proteins in this formula are easier for these babies to digest than milk or soy intact proteins.

Nutramigen is lactose and sucrose free. Sucrose is simple table sugar, a substance your baby may have a detrimental reaction to if he or she is also sensitive to lactose. Included in this formula is ARA and DHA, two components found in human breast milk vital to both brain and eye development. Another ingredient is choline, which is included in a concentration practically identical to that in breast milk. Clinical studies have shown an improvement in gastrointestinal distress and/or colic within 48 hours of switching to this formula.

It is recommended that either breast milk or baby formula be the sole source of nutrition for your baby up to six months of age. After six months baby food can be introduced, starting with rice and oatmeal cereal and gradually adding pureed fruit, vegetables and meats. Nutramigen can be given up to one year, at which time your doctor will review your baby's health profile and decide whether he or she can try cow's milk. If not, the Nutramigen may be continued or soy milk may be recommended.

When it comes to the price of baby formula, Nutramigen is certainly not going to be considered cheap. It is produced by a major name brand and is a specialty formula. Therefore, you can expect to pay more for this brand. If you have trouble with the costs, contact Mead Johnson and ask to be placed on their mailing list for samples and coupons. Also you can apply for an assistance program such as WIC. You will need your doctor to write a prescription for formula like Nutramigen in order for WIC to cover the cost. Your pediatrician may also be able to help you obtain the right formula for your baby if you cannot afford to do so.
