Low Iron Baby Formula
Some parents choose to feed their babies low iron baby formula. This choice is not without its share of controversy in some cases. While premature babies may require a special variety of low iron formula, full term babies in good health usually do not. There are two different sides to this issue -- some swear that low iron formula helps with constipation. Others say iron is necessary for good health and babies experience the same amount of constipation with a comparable formula with the full amount of iron. It is hard for parents to know which side to believe.
The best thing to do is speak to your pediatrician openly and honestly. If you've done your research and you are in strong support of low iron formula for your baby, say so. If you're on the fence and don't know what you prefer ask your pediatrician what he or she recommends. Some will recommend the traditional iron-enriched formula because of the dangers of iron deficiency. Dr. Betsy Lozoff performed a series of studies with results that showed long-term brain development in those who were iron deficient from a young age.
Iron is a key component of blood, but also is important for the brain. Enzymes containing iron help break down neurotransmitters which are the chemicals in the brain that send information back and forth between cells. Long story short, many doctors and scientists link low iron with poor brain development. Does that mean babies who are fed low-iron formulas will experience brain development problems? No, it does not. It simply means parents have this potential issue to consider when weighing the pros and cons of low iron formula.
If you've made the decision to use low iron baby formula, it can be purchased at a variety of locations. Both Similac and Enfamil make low-iron varieties of formula that come in powdered and liquid forms. You can also find this type of formula in ready to feed form, which means there is no mixing necessary. Researching different formula brands and prices on the Internet can help you when it comes to tracking down the best product for the best value. No matter what kind of formula you want to try always make sure you've cleared it with your baby's doctor.
